Wofford Falls to Georgia Southern in SoCon Opener, 60-44

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In the opening game of the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament, the Wofford men's basketball team was defeated by Georgia Southern 60-44 on Friday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Center. A 14-0 run by the Eagles over the final seven minutes of the first half was too much for the Terriers to overcome.


Wofford ends the season 13-19 overall and 7-11 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern is 14-18 overall. The Terriers were led by Indiana Faithfull and Spencer Collins with ten points each. Lee Skinner had nine points and nine rebounds. The Eagles were led by Eric Ferguson with 17 points, while Tre Bussey had 12 points and nine rebounds.


“It is a pretty simple game and they outworked us,” said head coach Mike Young. “Charlton out coached me, they out rebounded us and out-scrapped us in getting to a majority of the 50-50 balls. A great deal of credit goes to Georgia Southern. They had a great plan and changed defenses on us which had us on our heels a little bit and they got us. That is it for this team in this particular year.”


The Eagles scored the first four points of the game before buckets by Lee Skinner and Spencer Collins tied the game after four minutes of play. Georgia Southern had an 8-4 lead with 13:54 on the clock. Wofford tied the game at eight with a lay-up by Lee Skinner, but the Eagles led 11-8 with 12:09 left in the first half.


The game was tied at twelve after a lay-up by Karl Cochran at the 10:30 mark and tied at 14 with a shot by Jarell Byrd. Wofford took a 16-14 lead with a lay-up by Indiana Faithfull with 8:50 on the clock and had an 18-16 lead when Spencer Collins followed his own missed shot with a lay-up a minute later. The Eagles went on a 14-0 run to regain the lead at 30-18 with 2:55 left in the first half. Neither team scored for the remainder of the half as Georgia Southern had a twelve point advantage at the break.


Georgia Southern scored to open the second half and Wofford finally ended the run with a pair of free throws by Lee Skinner with 18:24 to make it a 32-20 game. The Terriers cut the lead to 32-24 after a lay-up by Karl Cochran, but the Eagles pushed the score to 39-26 at the 14:25 mark. John Swinton made it a ten point game with a three pointer. A three by Indiana Faithfull with 10:54 on the clock made it a 42-32 score.


With nine minutes left in the second half, Georgia Southern built a 49-32 lead. Wofford was able to cut the score to 49-37 after a bucket by Spencer Collins with 3:52 on the clock. The Eagles pushed the lead to 54-39 with two minutes remaining. Despite a late three by Indiana Faithfull, Georgia Southern was able to take a 60-44 victory.


Wofford shot 34.0% from the floor while Georgia Southern shot 37.5% overall. The Terriers were 3-of-20 from with three, while the Eagles were 4-of-13 from behind the arc. Georgia Southern was 14-of-19 from the line while Wofford was 5-of-9 on free throws. The Eagles had a 40 to 28 lead on the glass.


The game marked the final contest for Wofford senior Taylor Wagener. The Southern Conference Tournament will continue on March 9 in Asheville, N.C. Georgia Southern will play #1 seed Davidson on Saturday at noon.
