The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 18-9 by The Citadel on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Bulldogs scored ten runs in the first inning and took advantage of eleven walks on their way to the series win.
Wofford is now 8-13 on the season and 1-5 in SoCon play. The Citadel is 14-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Matthew Pelt and Clark Wise with three hits each, while Luke Feisal had four RBIs. The Bulldogs had three hits each from Mason Davis and Bo Thompson, with Joe Jackson adding five RBIs.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as they took advantage of five walks and had RBI singles from Bo Thompson and Calvin Orth. Drew DeKerlegand drove in two more runs with a double to left center for a 7-0 advantage. A home run over the right field fence by Joe Jackson drove in three runs to give the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead.
Wofford had two hits in the bottom of the first, but were unable to score as Alec Paradowski was thrown out at the plate. In the bottom of the third inning, the Terriers got on the board when Demetrius Jennings singled and moved to second on a groundout. An infield single by Alec Paradowski paired with a throwing error by the Bulldogs scored Jennings for a 10-1 game.
In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs added two runs on a single by Johnathan Stokes to push the lead to 12-1. In the bottom half the fourth, Eric Brenk walked and Matthew Pelt singled. With two outs, Luke Feisal hit a home run to left field to cut the lead to 12-4.
The Bulldogs stranded two runners in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Clark Wise led off with a double but was left on third base at the end of the inning. The Citadel added a run in the top of the sixth on a double by Mason Davis. A bases loaded walk to Joe Jackson scored a second run for a 14-4 advantage.
In the Wofford half of the sixth, the first two batters drew walks. A single by Matthew Pelt scored Eric Brenk from second to cut the lead to 14-5. A single by Demtrius Jennings loaded the bases with one out and a single by Clark Wise added a run. The score was 14-6 when Wofford left the bases loaded at the end of the sixth inning.
The Citadel added two runs in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded walk and a single by Mason Davis for a 16-6 lead. A RBI single from Drew Kerlegand and another bases loaded walk made it an 18-6 score. Eric Brenk got one run back on a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Feisal had an RBI double and a single by Matt Moore added a run to make it an 18-9 game. Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth innings.
Wofford starter Luke Leftwich (1-2) did not get out of the first inning, giving up eight runs on three hits with five walks and one strikeout. Tanner Hawley threw 3.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with one strikeout. Josh Simpson worked 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on three hits. Connell Anderson threw an inning and allowed four runs on one hit. Connor Foltyn gave up one hit. Will Stillman worked 2.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out two. Bradley Evsich picked up the final out.
The Citadel starter Austin Mason (1-1) threw five innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Kevin Connell worked 1.1 innings with two runs scored on four hits with one strikeout. Ryan Hines went a third of an inning and gave up one run on three hits. Ross White also went a third of an inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout. Zach Sherrill worked an inning and did not allow a hit. David Rivera threw the ninth and had two strikeouts.
Wofford will visit Presbyterian College on Wednesday afternoon before returning home on Friday night for the beginning of a three-game Southern Conference series against UNCG.
