Wofford Loses Finale at Appalachian State, 7-6

BOONE, N.C. – On Easter Sunday, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 7-6 by Appalachian State at Smith Stadium. The Terriers tied the game at six in the eighth inning, but the Mountaineers scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and secured the series victory. 

Wofford is now 13-16 on the season and 4-8 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State is 14-9 overall and 6-5 in the league. The Terriers were led by Josh Hyman with two hits and two RBIs. The Mountaineers had three hits by William Head and Hector Crespo had three RBIs.

In the first inning, both teams left one runner on third base. Appalachian State opened the bottom of the second with a single and walk, but a double play ended the scoring chance. With two outs in the top of the third, Matthew Kaskow and Alec Paradowski walked. A double to left field by Josh Hyman scored both runners for a 2-0 lead.

Appalachian State led off the bottom of the third with a single and a walk. A double to left field by Dillon Dobson drove in both runners to tie the game at 2-2. Wofford regained the lead in the top of the fourth when James Plaisted walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single up the middle by Luke Feisal scored Plaisted for a 3-2 score.

The Mountaineers had runners on the corners after two singles with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. A home run by Hector Crespo to left field made it a 5-3 advantage for Appalachian State. In the top of the fifth, the Terriers had runners on the corners when Seth Neely hit a double to center field to tie the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jaylin Davis led off with a double for the Mountaineers. With two outs, Gabe Dimock hit a single to score Davis and give Appalachian State a 6-5 lead. Two walks loaded the bases before a ground out ended the scoring chance. Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning. Appalachian State had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but a play at the plate on a fielder's choice got the final out of the inning. 

The Terriers led off the eighth with a single by Josh Hyman. He stole second and scored when James Plaisted hit a single to right field for a 6-6 game. Appalachian State had a single by William Head to open the bottom of the eighth, but he was stranded at third to end the inning.  

With one out in the top of the ninth, Clark Wise had an infield single. Wise stole second, but was stranded to end the half of the inning. The Mountaineers opened the bottom of the ninth with Will Callaway reaching on an error. A double to left center by Noah Holmes drove in Callaway for the win.

Wofford starter Luke Leftwich went 3.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Matthew Milburn threw an inning with one run allowed on two hits along with a strikeout. Will Stillman went 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and one strikeout. J.D. Osborne threw an inning had one strikeout and did not allow a hit. Eric Eck (1-2) went an inning and gave up two hits and one unearned run.

Appalachian State starter Jeffrey Springs threw four innings with three runs allowed on two hits and one strikeout. Taylor Thurber worked 3.1 innings with four hits allowed and three strikeouts. Josh Wilson (1-1) threw 1.2 innings and gave up one hit with one strikeout.  

Next week the Terriers will play at Winthrop on Tuesday and at Auburn on Wednesday before beginning a three-game series at Samford on Friday.
