The newest member of the staff at an Upstate funeral home has four legs and a tail.
His name is Moses, and he’s a Golden Retriever puppy about 8 months old who’s a trained service dog specializing in grief counseling.
The owners of the Cremation Society of South Carolina Westville Funerals bought Moses several months ago, and they say his presence around families is soothing.
“It lightens up the atmosphere for them,” said Matthew Armstrong who works for Westville.
Armstrong, and the others here, insist there’s no marketing push behind Moses, and they promise he’s not here to sell anyone on anything. Rather, they say he’s just here to lessen the pain of those grieving the loss of a loved one.
“To make the event a little less traumatic for them,” Armstrong said, before adding, “that’s what we’re here to do.”
