Scammers are looking to take your money and the Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office says they’re succeeding.

Deputies receive around 5 calls a week from scam victims, but they say that’s only a portion of the cases that are actually happening.

There is no direct way to protect yourself from being scammed, except to be informed.

The Sheriff’s Office sees the majority of scams coming from over the phone. The criminal tells you that you’ve won a big ticket item, and they’ll send it to you, if you pay the taxes.

This is the toughest scam to solve for deputies, because the money is overseas.  Most scammers don’t take enough money for them to be extradited back to the United States.

Other scams include job ad scams, online dating, the grandparent scam, online shopping, and foreign lottery winners.
