Families left homeless after an apartment fire last week are getting an extra boost. The Red Cross helped open a unique resource center aimed at giving long term help.

“I started out crying tears of sadness and now I’m just crying tears of joy because I never expected this, I didn’t think that complete strangers were going to help us out as much as they have,” says Alquisha Robinson, whose apartment burned.

More than 30 families were left homeless after a fire ripped through the Azalea Apartments. On Monday, the American

Red Cross Western Carolinas opened a multi-agency resource center called MARC for short. The center was opened at Oakdale Baptist Church on Highway 24. This MARC is a first for the Western Carolinas. It’s goal is to help people long term in recovery.

The center provides housing help, financial assistance, emotional guidance, help with getting kids back to school. The goal isn’t just to help people with the essentials, but help get people back on their feet, says Emergency Services Specialist with American Red Cross Western Carolinas Beth Marett.

“I think it brings the community together,” says Marett, “I think the community owns the recovery.”

11 non-profit Anderson agencies, county government organizations and faith based groups were on hand to help families.

The center will be open again on Tuesday at Oakdale Baptist Church on 6724 Highway 24 in Townville. Donations can be sent to 115 Whitehall Road, Anderson, SC 29625.
