Is Your Car Seat Installed Properly? It’s Worth The Check

Petition Started To Stop Child Hot Car Deaths (Image 1)

In 2011, 11 kids in South Carolina died in car crashes that weren’t restrained properly, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Safe Kids Upstate says many parents are using car seats, but they may be using them incorrectly.

“It is very tricky and not doing it correctly it doesn’t mean that you’re a bad parent. It just means that you are one of the 8 out of 10 that install in incorrectly. And so we’re just here to help you learn how to install that seat correctly everytime,” said Safe Kids Upstate Manager Cynthia Fryer.

Federal law requires you to keep your child facing backwards in a car seat until they are 1 year old and 20 pounds. After that they may face forward in the back seat, but remain in a car seat.

Move your child to a booster seat when they outgrow the weight limit of their car seat.  NHTSA recommends somewhere between four and seven years.

Your child must stay in some sort of child restraint seat until they are 4’9″ and 80 pounds.

Safe Kids Upstate recommends that you don’t let your child ride in the front seat until they are 12 years old.

To make sure that you have your car seat installed correctly, Safe Kids Upstate has several locations where you can get your car seat checked by appointment.
