Former University of South Carolina football coach and athletics director Paul Dietzel died Tuesday morning at the age of 89.
LSU Sports Information reports Dietzel – who was the head coach of that school during it’s 1958 national championship season – passed away after a brief illness.
Dietzel was the head coach and athletic director at USC from 1966 to 1974 and led the Gamecocks to the 1969 ACC Championship. He remains the only coach in school history to lead his team to a conference title.
Dietzel posted a 42-53-1 record over his nine seasons with the Gamecocks.
He came to Columbia after serving as LSU football coach from 1955 to 1961 and returned for four years as the athletic director in Baton Rouge starting in 1978.
One of his last major public appearances came at the opening of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame building in Natchitoches. He was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
