A woman has been arrested and charged with setting her house on fire during an argument Saturday morning.

Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kevin Bobo stated that Maria Teresa O’Neil, 59, of Una, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and third-degree arson.

According to an incident report obtained from the sheriff’s office, firefighters from the Una Fire Department responded to O’Neil’s home at 174 Euclid Road around 10 a.m. after receiving a call about a fire at the home. When they arrived, they found that the fire, which had started in a hallway outside of a bedroom, had been put out by the residents.

Spartanburg County deputies responded to the scene shortly thereafter and spoke with a man who lived at the home. The man stated that he and some friends were in a back bedroom when O’Neil poured gas in the hallway and lit it on fire trapping them inside. A deputy then responded to another home on Euclid Road where O’Neil said she wanted to speak with them about the incident.

According to the report, the deputy read O’Neil her Miranda Warning since she was a suspect in the fire and she stated that she had told the man and his friends to leave her house and when they refused she told the deputy that she poured alcohol in the hall and lit it.

The report states that O’Neil told the deputy that, “Fire is my god. You can see it in my eyes, you can see fire in my eyes.” During the investigation, the report states that a woman stated that O’Neil told her that she planned to start a fire.

O’Neil was placed under arrest and transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center where she is awaiting a bond hearing.
