The Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge hosted its sixth annual Lake Lure New Year’s Day Polar Plunge at noon in Lake Lure on Jan. 1.
Swimmers paid $20 and received a Polar Plunge Toboggan and a chance to wade into chilly Lake Lure. Organizers said this was the most attended plunge in the events history with more than 200 participants.
Lake Lure Mayor Bob Keith awarded “Best Costume” and contestants were encouraged to be creative. Some costumes included President Obama, Sarah Palin, a “Minion” and others.
Prizes were given for the oldest and youngest plungers, as well as a prize to the contestant who traveled the farthest.
Proceeds from this event will benefit the chamber. For more information, visit the Lake Lure New Year’s Day Polar Plunge Facebook page.
