You lose most of your body heat through your head so wearing a hat can go a long way to keeping the rest of you warm.

“The clothing is keeping the temperature inside,” says Williamston Fire Chief Steve Ellison.

Firefighters use special Thermal Imaging Cameras to find a fire in a smoky building, look for hotspots or people. Today we’re using the technology to show where your body loses heat out in the cold.

“Whatever your looking at it with that’s warm is gonna show up bright or white on the camera,” Ellison says.

When Ellison points the camera at an uncovered head and hands show up bright white. That’s where heat from the body is escaping. If you’re outside too long hypothermia can start to set in. Adding a hat and gloves can go a long way to keeping you warm when you’re outside. They can also help ward off frostbite.
