A portion of Highway 121 South near Whitmire in Newberry County is back open after a deadly wreck and Haz-Mat situation early this morning.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s office says the closure happened around 6:20 a.m. following a Saturday morning crash between a tractor trailer and a car.

Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said that the passenger in the car, 26-year-old Shelly Elizabeth Wicker, formerly of Whitmire, was pronounced dead at the scene. The unidentified female driver of the vehicle was airlifted to a nearby hospital where her condition was not immediately available. Wicker was wearing a seatbelt, Newton stated.

According to Highway Patrol, the car crossed the center lane and hit the tractor trailer. The driver of the trailer was not injured, according to troopers.

Newberry County deputies said that the truck was leaking diesel fuel and Haz-Mat crews worked to contain the spill. The Department of Health and Environmental Control was also been called to the scene to consult due to the proximity to Duncan Creek. Incident Command say it does not think any fuel has reached the creek.
