Simpsonville Police are searching for a man who led them on a high speed chase and nearly hit two police officers after a shoplifting incident at Walmart Friday night.

Captain Kevin Threlkeld of the police department said that officers were in the parking Walmart when they saw Loss Prevention Officers at the store chasing a shoplifting suspect. The officers attempted to stop the suspect as one officer got out of his vehicle and approached the suspect’s SUV. The suspect then drove his SUV in the direction of the officer making him move to avoid getting hit.

According to Threlkeld, an officer then started to pursue the suspect, identified as David Scott Lawter, of Spartanburg, onto Grandview Drive. The chase continued onto Interstate 385 northbound and then back onto Grandview Drive. Two officers attempted to stop the SUV and deployed “stop sticks.” The first officer was not able to deploy them in time and as the second officer was deploying his, Lawter drove at the second officer and barely missed hitting him, Threlkeld said.

The chase continued onto Fairview Road then to Harrison Bridge Road and finally onto Southeast Main Street and thru Fountain Inn before officers called off the pursuit.

Threlkeld said that Lawter has been charged with attempted murder, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, failure to stop for blue lights, being a habitual offender and shoplifting three.

If anyone has any information about Lawter’s whereabouts they are asked to contact the Simpsonville Police Department at (864) 967-9536.
