SC Senate Blocks Last-Ditch Roads Bill Attempt

The South Carolina Senate rejected a last-ditch effort Wednesday to pass a roads bill this year. The House added the roads bill it had already passed to the list of items the legislature would be allowed to debate during their special session, but the Senate refused to go along.

Sen. Larry Martin, R-Pickens, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said allowing debate on the roads bill could keep the Senate from passing a budget, since senators who are against a gas tax increase had already blocked the roads bill during the regular session. Lawmakers have not passed a state budget, even though the new budget year starts July 1.
