RIVERVIEW, FL (WFLA) – There wasn’t a dry eye in the room Thursday as a deputy helped surprise a 6-year-old girl. The little girl, from Riverview, has special needs. She was heartbroken a month ago after her custom-made tricycle was stolen right out of her family’s home.
It was sitting in the foyer when someone broke in and took it. That day, the girl, Deshawn, begged the responding Hillsborough deputy, “Please get my bike back.”
Deputy Cliff Fletcher is the father of two boys. He said he knew that day he had to do something. “I was moved to help,” he told News Channel 8.
What happened next brought Deshawn’s parents to tears. The Hillsborough Sheriff’s County Office, Riverview First Baptist Church and Riverview Chamber of Commerce came together to collect the funds to get another tricycle made for Deshawn.
Deshawn smiled with delight at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office District 4 Headquarters Thursday as she saw her gift for the first time. “I just want to thank you,” her father said, his voice wavering as he began. “I never expected this.” Major Robert Bullara told the room, “This is a perfect example of it takes a village to raise a child.”
