“Sharkbanz” work to protect scared swimmers in surf

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — With all the recent shark attacks along the North Carolina and South Carolina coasts, many people are concerned about getting in the water. One company says they have a solution.

“You just want to be able to go out and enjoy the ocean for the glorious place that it is,” says Sharkbanz co-founder Nathan Garrison.

Sharkbanz aims to eliminate some of those concerns by utilizing science.

“Sharks are really amazing animals,” Garrison says. “They have the most powerful electrical sense in the animal kingdom and they use this to navigate and hunt for prey in murky, shallow water like we have along the North Carolina and South Carolina coast.”

The bands, which are about the size and weight of a sports watch, can be worn on your wrist or ankle. Product tests show many species of sharks are scared off by the bands.

“It’s sending out a powerful, magnetic signal that disrupts the sharks electrical sense in a way that’s really unpleasant for it,” Garrison explains. “It’s like having a super bright light shined suddenly right in your eyes in a really dark room.”

Divers off our coast say they come into contact with the notorious fish often. Still, they do not use shark repellents like Sharkbanz.

“We encounter sharks very, very, very frequently,” says Blue Region SCUBA owner Larry Cox. “They ignore us, swim right by us and go on there own way.”

Cox says the recent attacks are just a matter of mistaken identity.

“We’re upset that the sharks are getting such bad publicity when it’s their ocean,” says Cox. “They’re in their surf feeding. We see them all the time. They’re very graceful critters. They’re very beautiful. They’re very agile and they’re just fun to watch.”
