All lanes on Northbound Interstate 85 are now open after a tanker overturned near Powdersville blocking all lanes for eight hours. Two semis were involved – one of those vehicles was carrying a highly flammable liquid.
The accident happened on the interstate near the 40 mile marker (Highway 153 Exit) close to the Anderson County border with Greenville County.
Powdersville Fire Department Chief Scott King says one of the vehicles was a tanker that was carrying polyurethane, a highly flammable substance that’s used in wood staining. The chief says the tanker overturned, but there are no leaks.
A third vehicle was involved. We’re told there were no serious injuries, but some people were taken to a hospital to be checked out.
A tow truck was being brought from Spartanburg to help clean up the crash site. Northbound I-85 still has backup but all lanes are now opened.
The Anderson County HAZMAT Team, South Carolina DOT and the Highway Patrol are also at the scene.
