Columbia, SC – One person is dead after being recovered from the Congaree River early Sunday morning, according to the Columbia Fire Department.
CBS affiliate WLTX-TV reports the Richland County Coroner’s Office has identified the person who drowned as 31 year old James Henry Hutto, Jr. of West Columbia.
They say the autopsy showed Hutto died of fresh water drowning.
Brick Lewis with the fire department said they received a call late Saturday night from a person saying Hutto never came up from the water where they went under. The person who made the call was able to get out of the water on their own.
Lewis said that the Gervais Street bridge was closed from around 11:30 pm Saturday until after the body was recovered from below the canal spillway around 2:30 am Sunday.
Lewis said the fire department received help from other agencies including the West Columbia Fire Department, Cayce Public Safety, Columbia Police Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s Dive Team, and SLED.
