McCain Responds To Trump

In a USA Today opinion piece today, Trump accuses McCain of abandoning the nation's veterans and making America "less safe" through his votes in Congress.

WASHINGTON – Arizona Sen. John McCain is responding to remarks by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who dismissed the former Vietnam POW’s status as a war hero by saying, “I like people who weren’t captured.”

McCain told MSNBC this morning that Trump doesn’t need to apologize to him, but should tell veterans he’s sorry.

McCain says it was “the great honor” of his life to be “in the company of heroes.” He adds that there are “so many men and women who served and sacrificed — and happened to be held prisoner.” And McCain says, “To denigrate in any way that service” is “offensive to veterans.”

But Trump is continuing his attacks on McCain. In a USA Today opinion piece today, Trump accuses McCain of abandoning the nation’s veterans and making America “less safe” through his votes in Congress.

And in a contentious interview on NBC’s “Today” Show, Trump took issue with the media’s reporting on his comments about McCain’s war record, made at a conservative forum in Iowa. He insisted in a telephone interview with anchor Matt Lauer that he had said “four times” that he respected those captured in war.
