LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. (AP) — A volunteer working to protect sea turtle nests is recovering from a gunshot wound after a dispute with a man who said he disliked sea turtles.
The 72-year-old volunteer, Stan Pannaman, was shot in his hip late Friday during a routine volunteer shift in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Witnesses say the dispute began when a man approached two volunteers and said he did not like sea turtles. The man began pulling stakes from the perimeter of the protected nest. The dispute escalated and the man shot one of the volunteers.
The man is being held at an area jail without bond on multiple charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
