SENECA, S.C. (AP) – The Oconee County coroner says a Seneca police officer has shot and killed a suspect who was driving toward him in a car.
Coroner Karl Addis said in a statement that the shooting happened around 8:20 p.m. Sunday in a fast food restaurant parking lot.
Addis says the shooting happened during an undercover drug investigation by Seneca police.
The coroner says Zachary Hammond, 19-year-old, was killed. An autopsy is planned.
According to the Seneca Police Department Lt. Mark Tiller was the officer involved. Tiller is a 10 year veteran of law enforcement and has been employed by the Seneca Police Department since January 2010.
Addis says Hammond was trying to evade police when an officer felt threatened as the suspect drove toward him. Addis says the officer fired twice with both shots hitting the suspect in the chest.
The officer has been placed on leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.
