SPARTANBURG COUNTY – A suspicious looking package – believed to be a pipe bomb that was found in the driveway of a home in Cowpens over the weekend – was not an explosive.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday the package found at the home on Bud Arthur Bridge Road had the appearance of a pipe bomb, but had no components inside that would have made it an explosive.

The family living at the home found it Sunday afternoon after driving their car over the package.

The sheriff’s office explosive unit was called to the scene along with deputies, EMS and the fire department.

The package was taken away from the house and detonated. Lt. Kevin Bobo of the Spartanburg Co. Sheriff’s Office said the device was not a pipe bomb.
