The fire is out, but a company that produces electric buses in Greenville will be closed to employees for the next few days.

A fire started early Wednesday morning at Proterra on Whitlee Court near the interchange of Interstate 85 and Laurens Road. Greenville Police say two explosions were heard in the building and all employees were able to get out safely.

Black smoke poured from the building as several fire departments responded to Proterra. We’re told one of the electric buses produced there burned inside the warehouse, but fire investigators don’t know if that was the cause of the fire or if the bus was damaged by the flames.

The sprinkler systems worked correctly to knock out the flames as firefighters stood by waiting until the building was safe to enter. We’re told the fire was contained to one part of the building, but smoke passed through much of the facility.

Dairy Drive is closed to cars according to firefighters. Employees of PET Dairy are asked to take Fairforest Road.
