UNION COUNTY – A missing canoer was found safe Monday morning at the Fairfield County border with Newberry County.
A Fairfield County Sheriff’s deputy found Stewart Bagwell according to the Union County Sheriff.
The search started Monday morning to find the man who was reported missing during a canoe trip on the Tyger River in Union County.
A friend reported Bagwell missing from the Lil Cricket store in Carlisle. A friend says the men were canoeing when Bagwell became tired and complained of hip pain after they passed the Highway 72 bridge.
Bagwell was let off and his friend continued on in the canoe to where his car was parked according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office incident report. The friend was to reach the car and drive back to pick up Bagwell at the Tuckertown Bridge in Newberry County.
Bagwell didn’t arrive at the bridge, so the friend called police from Carlisle.
The friend told deputies Bagwell may have been too tired to reach the meeting point before dark. Bagwell did have a tent, a stove and camping gear with him.
Authorities decided to wait until Monday morning to conduct the search in daylight. The Department of Resources airplane was to be used in the search before any rescue crews were to enter the water.
The friend said the river was so shallow in some areas, the men had to carry their canoe.
Bagwell was reported to be found safe around 11:20 a.m. Monday.
