The Spartanburg City Council approved the purchases of body cameras and tasers in Monday night’s meeting.
The council voted 7-0 in approval of purchasing 85 body cameras and 85 tasers for the Spartanburg Police Department. Every street officer in the department will be assigned with a camera and taser.
They city says they will take steps to seek reimbursement from the state for the cost of body cameras, related accessories and data storage. The purchases will be on a five year plan that will cost at almost a million dollars.
Spartanburg City Council also approved the demolition of the former Economy Inn located on South Pine Street in Spartanburg.
According to the city, the motel has been closed down since 2014. An $80,000 grant will be given to the Spartanburg Development Corporation to use for the demolition.
The council voted unanimously to approve a management contract for the city to have ownership of the Oakview Apartments located on Howard St.
The city is currently in litigation with the owner of the apartments and once that is done the tenants will have 9-12 months to move out. Once the apartments are vacant the city will proceed with it’s public use for the property.
