Greenwood County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested the mother of an infant found dead in a dumpster on Wednesday.
In a prepared statement, sheriff’s office officials stated that Kia Deon Singletary, 24, of Greenwood, has been charged with desecration of human remains.
According to officials, Singletary, the mother of the child, is believed to have given birth to the baby boy early Wednesday morning. After placing the baby in the dumpster and attempting to clean up, Singletary called 911 and requested medical assistance, officials stated. Sheriff’s office officials state that they were not aware of the matter until they were notified by officials with Self Regional Hospital that Singletary had delivered a baby before arriving at the hospital. The notification led deputies to searching for the child and they subsequently found the infant in the dumpster.
“When a person finds themselves in a situation like this, please reach out for help,” Sheriff Tony Davis said. “There are agencies that will assist.”
Investigators are not sure if the child was alive or stillborn and are awaiting the results of an autopsy. More charges are possible and the investigating is ongoing.
Singletary is being held at the Greenwood County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.
