GREENVILLE COUNTY – Extra counselors are at Bryson Middle School Wednesday after a student was taken into custody following the death of his mother.
The 13-year old student was not on the middle school campus when he was taken into custody by Greenville County Sheriff’s deputies. The unidentified teenager was walking down Woodruff Road.
A contract worker found the body of Isabel Cristina Zuluaga, 44, Tuesday morning at the home on Hipps Avenue in the Simpsonville area. The Greenville County Coroner is conducting an autopsy Wednesday. The coroner says Zuluaga suffered multiple injuries and the case is being investigated as a homicide.
Bryson Middle School was on a modified lockdown Tuesday during the death investigation. Principal Dr. Adrienne Davenport says three extra counselors are at the school Wednesday from the district office to meet with any students or faculty members who have questions. This is in addition to the three guidance counselors on staff at the school according to district spokesperson Beth Brotherton.
Davenport says the counselors are available to talk about the event that happened off campus and was reported by media outlets in the Upstate.
The teenager in custody has not been identified because of his age. The matter has been sent to family court.
