ANDERSON COUNTY- A Fountain Inn man was killed Tuesday morning when the tractor-trailer he was driving struck a garbage truck stopped on the side of Interstate 85 near Piedmont.
Kevin D. Lewis, 39, died on impact according to the Anderson County Coroner on southbound I-85 near the Highway 86 interchange (exit 35) around 5:00 a.m.
The coroner says the cab of the 18-wheeler broke loose from the trailer and flipped. The trailer then caught on fire.
All lanes of southbound I-85 were blocked according to SCHP troopers, but one lane did reopen to traffic as the clean up operation continued throughtout the morning.
The S.C. Highway Patrol detoured traffic off the interstate about five miles from the crash scene. The crash scene was reported to be clear by SCDOT at 11;35 a.m. according to a tweet by the agency.
Anderson County Emergency Services Director Taylor Jones says Wren, Powdersville, and Piercetown fire departments were called to the scene.
Lewis was married and had three children according to the coroner. Investigators believe he was driving to work in Anderson.
