Tuesday morning, the North Carolina Department of Justice broke ground on the new Western Regional Crime Laboratory in Henderson County.

The facility in Edneyville will be twice as large as the current one in Asheville and be able to handle more kinds of testing – like firearms and DNA, that right now are only done at a lab in Raleigh, according to NC Attorney General Roy Cooper.

“DNA helps us to exonerate the innocent and convict the guilty and it helps us find suspects that we can’t locate otherwise,” Cooper explained.

The lab Is expected to open in 2017.
