For years, The Butterfly Foundation has taught people culinary skills and helped the homeless in the Spartanburg community.
Now, a partnership with the City of Spartanburg and the Soteria Community Development Corporation is preparing people for jobs in construction. The training includes a few weeks of soft skills training and then demolition work on several homes in Spartanburg.
Devante Hawkins was on the crew this summer that deconstructed several homes in the Northside neighborhood.
“It feels real good to put in work and see the outcome,” said Hawkins of the new home being built in place of the old one. “In order for the whole city to build and accommodate to new opportunities, you have to take down the old and put up the new.”
Liberty Canzater, with the Butterfly Foundation says the training is something desperately needed in this community.
“We definitely work with individuals who are either unemployed, underemployed, previously incarcerated, homeless, and so some of the skills that they have or had just need to be freshened up,” Canzater explained.
If you are interested in applying for the program – the job fair is Thursday, September 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Butterfly Foundation at 498 Howard Street.
Those selected will be paid for the on-the-job training, after completing the soft skills training. Participants do have to live in Spartanburg.
