Pickens County Inmate Death Investigation

Sheriff Calls For SLED Investigation

Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark is requesting that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigate the death of an inmate at the Pickens County Detention Facility.

A detention officer found a 34-year old male hanging by a sheet in a bathroom around 2:10 Saturday morning.

Sheriff Clark says the man was unconscious and immediate efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The man has been in the jail since June 29, 2015.

He was brought in by Easley Police on multiple counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct 3rd Offense.

At the time of the death, the man was being held, by himself, in an arraignment room that jailers turned into a cell due to overcrowding at the jail.

Four detention officers were on duty at the time of death.

The detention facility was built in 1974 and can hold 93 inmates.

Sheriff Clark says the jail is currently housing 208 inmates.

The Pickens County Coroner’s Office says the inmate, Michael Morris, committed suicide by hanging.
