According to Anderson Police, officers attempted to pull over the driver of a stolen vehicle near the Home Depot in Anderson when the driver started a chase.

During the chase, officers say the driver started throwing items out of the window.

The chase ended near Pendleton on E Queen St. near the intersection of Greenville St., but the person in the vehicle barricaded himself inside.

There was no indication whether the driver had any weapons in the vehicle, but SWAT and negotiators were brought in to settle the situation as peacefully as possible.

After communicating back and forth, law enforcement on scene released tear gas into the vehicle and removed the suspect inside.

The driver of the vehicle was then identified as Steven Ray Smith Sr., 51 of Williamston.

According to our crew at the scene, Smith was treated by EMS before being taken into custody.

No officers were injured during this incident.

Smith is charged with failure to stop for blue lights and possession of a stolen vehicle. He is being held at the Anderson County Detention Center.

A bond was set at $15,000 each for the two charges. His initial appearance with the Solicitors Office is set for November 6.
