A photo showing a vehicle belonging to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office in a handicapped parking space has been shared by many on social media.
7 On Your Side spoke with Sheriff Chuck Wright who says the picture was brought to his attention. Wright says a detention officer was taking an inmate, who could not walk, inside Spartanburg Regional .
According to the Sheriff, there would normally be another officer staying in the vehicle, but they have been shorthanded with Rolling Thunder and rescue relief in Columbia.
“I didn’t like where he parked but he had to stay with the inmate. Not saying it’s right but he was showing compassion because the inmate had issues with mobility,” Sheriff Wright said.
He says the Sheriff’s Office is still considering possible punishment.
