NC Toddler Mauled By Pit Bull Released From Hospital, Now In Foster Care

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A 20-month-old Fayetteville boy who was mauled by one his family’s pit bulls in August was recently released from the hospital and is now in foster care.

Kenny Rodgers was walking up the basement stairs with his mom when their 90-pound pit bull snapped.

“It scared the crap out of me. I mean, I thought I was going to lose my son,” said Kenny’s mom, Katherine Rodgers.

She believes they startled the dog once they reached the top of the stairs.

“The next thing you know, Cratos went right for his face,” Katherine Rodgers said.

The boy suffered multiple bites to his jaw line, forehead and chin.

He remained in critical condition at UNC Hospital for almost a month. The dog was euthanized following the attack.

Katherine Rodgers said she never had any issues with any of the family’s six dogs before the attack.

“They would come right up topit-bull-attack1 him and just give him a kiss, then they’d would run off and do their own little thing,” she said.

Following the attack, the Rodgers 3-year-old son was placed in protective custody but now back home.

Kenny Rodgers is in foster care.

To get him back, the family has to be in a different house with no pets.

Katherine Rodgers said Kenny is almost back to normal.

“He’s up, he’s moving around, he’s vocalizing,” she said.

The family admits they’ve been investigated by social services for other incidents.

They’re now working to prove they can provide the best care for their kids.

“We’d love to have him home but we understand the situation,” she said.

Police are calling the incident a horrific accident and the parents were not charged.

Meanwhile, they’ve moved into a new home and Kenny’s bedroom is all setup and they hope to have him home by their next court date.
