Police say they recovered a gravestone that was in the road at North Liberty St. in Spartanburg.
The woman who found the gravestone said she thought it was just a box until she went out and looked at it,
She had her grandchildren move it out of the road and into her backyard.
Police took the stone and contacted the step-daughter of the deceased who said he was buried at Green Lawn Cemetery on Fernwood Glendale Rd.
A man at the cemetery looked through his records and found that the deceased had a bronze marker at his grave site and there wasn’t a record of the veteran granite headstone.
He said that the government only allows for each person buried to have one marker.
Police went to the grave site and found a bronze marker intact.
The headstone was turned over to the cemetery, but there is no information on where it came from or how it ended up in the road.
