SC Town Requires All Pit Bulls To Be Spayed Or Neutered

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) – A new ordinance in Beaufort County now requires owners of pit bulls and pit bull mixes to have their pets spayed or neutered.

The Beaufort Gazette reports that the ordinance approved last week probably won’t be enforced until after the first of the year. That will give the county a chance to tell people about the new rules and offer free services to pet owners.

The ordinance was passed because of the high number of pit bulls and mixes in the county animal shelter and the high number of those dogs having to be euthanized.

Beaufort County Animal Services will distribute brochures and is offering pet owners $400 worth of vouchers for free spay and neuter operations. The county also plans off free microchips and rabies vaccines.
