Upstate Haunted Attractions Open, Aim To Scare

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – As Halloween nears, haunted attractions have opened in several cities and towns across the Upstate.

Butcher’s Ridge in Mayo in Spartanburg County takes visitors on a tour through a winding maze in the middle of the woods behind Lake Blalock.

“It takes a toll on you,” said Jeff Hopper, who started the attraction six years ago. “I can’t come through here at night; it messes with me.”

Under state law, haunted attractions must be inspected at least once per year and use flame-resistant materials and fabrics. In addition, there must be fire extinguishers at various points throughout an attraction.
