One man died Sunday morning in a crash on Interstate 85 near the town of Fair Play.
According to Anderson County Coroner Charlie Boseman, Gary A. Stephens, 60 of Blacksburg, SC, was killed when his tractor trailer swerved off the right side of the road into a wooded area at mile marker 5 around 6:22 a.m.
According to Boseman, the incident began when a tired driver headed from Atlanta lost control of their vehicle, hit a guide wire in the median, and spun around. Stephens reportedly swerved to avoid colliding with the car.
Stephens was also accompanied by his 14 year old dog and long time travel companion, who survived the crash, according to Boseman.
Chief Mark Bryant with Fork Rescue Squad says one of two crew members who responded to the wreck has adopted the dog, named Cosmo, with the family’s permission.
The woman who crashed into the guard rail was not injured.
