The Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra played the French national anthem Saturday night to start their concert at Converse College.

Music director Sarah Ioannides told 7 News that at times like this, music is a way of helping people heal.

“I think of this wonderful quote by Leonard Bernstein in response to violence, all we can do is make music more meaningful, more passionately, more intensely, and more devotedly to express ourselves,” said Ioannides.

“So tonight we wanted to respond and touch people. To have the opportunity to process what is really unspeakable.”

The scheduled concert at Twichell Auditorium also featured guest violinist Kristin Lee.
