Moped Driver Identified After Deadly Wreck Outside Of Furman Univ.

Moped Crash Furman

The Greenville County Coroner says 35-year-old Jose Anotnio Martinez Vasquez was killed after his moped was struck by a vehicle on Poinsett Hwy in Greenville Co., Thursday.

Travelers Rest Police received a call shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday saying an accident had happened in front of Furman’s main gate.

Three other vehicles were involved in the wreck, but one vehicle drove away after a passenger got out and assessed the damage.

Police are still searching for a red or burgundy SUV, probably a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe or a 2006 Chevrolet Suburban, that left the scene.

The Vasquez was struck from behind by the first car. The second and third cars seem to have struck only the moped.

The road is back open and traffic no longer needs to be routed through Furman’s campus.
