SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – On Saturday night, a North Carolina man was shot in the back at a rest area in Cabarrus County and left paralyzed from the waist down.
Greg McKee, 43, told investigators he was washing his hands at a rest area off I-85 when two men came up and stood on either side of him. He said when he attempted to run, one of the men shot him in the back.
The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism operates welcome areas while the South Carolina Department of Transportation oversees rest areas.
State officials said they train employees once per year to handle several kinds of emergencies.
The South Carolina Department of Highway Patrol also said troopers patrol both welcome centers and rest areas multiple times per day.
“We’re very careful,” said Fran Stephens, who’s traveling from Ohio to Florida with her husband. “I wait for him and he waits for me and we sort of stick together, but if there’s anything questionable, we don’t get out of the vehicle.”
