Parents of students at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville received an automated message telling them that a student was arrested for having a hand gun at school.
The School District says the student was arrested and charged with having a weapon on school grounds and unlawful possession.
The gun was not loaded, but the student also had a magazine with several bullets.
The student turned himself in to the school resource officer, according to the district.
The student was suspended and recommended for expulsion, according to district Director of Communications Oby Lyles.
