The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is auditing their evidence and property room to see whether evidence may have been mishandled by a former employee.
According to our coverage partner the Times-News, the employee, former head of the evidence and property room Christopher Byers, told the county in mid-November that he had a substance abuse problem and reported the potential misconduct according to Lt. Lowell Griffin.
An independent audit began on Friday and could take up to three weeks to complete.
Byers has not been charged with a crime while the investigation takes place.
Byers’s attorney, Steve Lindsay told 7News that Byers is cooperating with the District Attorney and the Sheriff’s Office to determine if any cases were compromised or if anything is missing.
