CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton plans to meet with the president of The Citadel after online photos surfaced showing cadets with pillowcases over their heads similar to Ku Klux Klan garb.
Sharpton says he plans to meet with retired Air Force Lt. Gen. John Rosa on Wednesday in the wake of the incident in which photos of the cadets surfaced on social media sites last week.
Eight cadets involved have been suspended. The college says an investigation indicated the cadets were taking part in a “Ghosts of Christmas Past” skit.
Local civil rights activists have called for Rosa to step down. Rosa issued a statement last week saying he plans to honor the terms of his contract to serve as president of the military college until 2018.
