HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Harrisburg couple has been sentenced to decades in prison for the starvation death of their 9-year-old son.
Kimberly Tutko, 40, was sentenced Wednesday to 20-40 years in prison. Her husband, Jarrod Tutko Sr., was sentenced to 21-42 years.
Both pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and child endangerment in the death of Jarrod Tutko Jr. The boy died of starvation and malnutrition in August 2014. Mr. Tutko also pleaded guilty to concealing his son’s death.
Prosecutors said the couple barely kept their son alive in order to receive welfare checks.
The Tutkos also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and child endangerment in a case involving their 10-year-old daughter. Prosecutors said she was just hours from death when they found her brother’s body.
The couple’s other five children are in foster care.
