Owner Charged After Kids Found Locked Inside NC Daycare

HAVELOCK, N.C. (WNCT) – A daycare owner is charged with child abuse, accused of locking children inside her business with no adult supervision.

Officers with the Havelock Police Department say they responded Friday afternoon around 3:12 p.m. to the Prince and Princess Play Date Child Care about reports of the children being locked inside the business with no adult supervision.

When they arrived at the scene, they met with a parent trying to pick up her child. They say the business was locked with no employees on scene.

The owner of the business arrived and officers found all the children inside the business. Eight children between the ages of 11 months and 7 years old were found inside the building alone. None required medical treatment.

Investigators say the owner of the business, Danika Danyelle Edwards, misled and fabricated details to officers as to why the children were locked inside the business.

On Monday, Edwards was arrested on six counts of misdemeanor child abuse and was given a $5,000 secured bond and placed in the Craven County Detention Center. She has a Jan. 21 court date in Havelock District Court.

Police say the investigation continues and additional charges are pending. They add that the case is also being investigated by Craven County DSS to determine if the business is a legally operated child care center.

If you have any information about the incident, contact the Havelock Police at 252-447-3212 or Craven County Crime Stoppers at 252-633-5141.
