How Criminals Use Your Christmas Trash To Target Your Home

On Friday morning many families will be opening their Christmas gifts. That means a great deal boxes and wrapping paper will be left behind. Many of those empty boxes will be put out with the trash. And that can be a problem.

Some of the gifts people will be getting come in large, marked boxes, like TVs and laptops. Once everything is opened up, we so innocently put those boxes out with the trash on the curb. And that’s the problem.

A criminal driving or walking by can see those boxes and it gives them an inventory of what’s inside your home. It doesn’t take much for them to wait and see when you’re not there. They can then get inside — and make off with whatever’s available to them, including those new gifts.

“We have individuals we know for a fact drive around looking for opportunities and if they drive around and see that they are going to target that house. They are going to wait for you to leave and target the house,” said Lt. James Perez, Fairfield Police Dept.

The solution to this is very simple. Break down those boxes. Make sure they are in the trash bin or turn them inside out. Again, you don’t want to advertise what’s inside your home.
