SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – A man accused of murder in South Carolina was shot by a U.S. Marshal in the parking lot of Lewis Drug at 10th Street and Cliff Avenue in Sioux Falls Saturday, according to a press release from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

37-year-old Lonnie Haskell Powers, Jr. of Summerville, S.C. was wanted for the murder of 55-year-old James Anthony Hill in Ridgeville, SC. South Carolina authorities received a tip Friday night that Powers was in Sioux Falls. The sheriff’s office contacted U.S. Marshals in South Dakota.

Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens held a short press conference Saturday afternoon, where he said U.S. Marshals were led to the Lewis Drug parking lot where they surrounded a car.

Sioux Falls Police say Powers reportedly pulled a handgun and a U.S. Marshal shot and killed him. SWAT teams arrived shortly after.

The FBI will be leading the investigation.
