The Anderson Co. Coroner, Greg Shore has identified the remains found in Powdersville as 46-year-old Gary Calvin Burton.
He says they were able identify him by an implanted defibrillator.
His remains were found off of River Road Sunday.
According to Captain Garland Major, someone was 4-wheeling in the area Sunday night and found a skull and the other scattered bones.
Officials aren’t sure how long the remains have been there or what happened to Burton yet, but Captain Major believes he’s been out there for a while.
Burton was reported missing by his wife on June 28, 2015 when she last saw him at Greenville Hospital.
Burton had a history of heart problems, and they don’t know where he went after he was released from the hospital.
The Sheriff’s office brought in a forensic anthropologist from Spartanburg to help.
It could take day or more to determine the cause of death, coroner says.
