Chimney Rock’s Grady has better record than Punxsutawney Phil

Grady the Groundhog emerged from hibernation this morning at Chimney Rock State Park and did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring.

Grady also predicted that the Broncos will win the Superbowl, much to the dismay of the many Panthers fans in the crowd!

“Grady the Groundhog” has been the Chimney Rock State Park for 11 years.

This Grady (there have been multiple Grady’s) has been predicting the beginning of Spring and the Super Bowl winner for the past 5 years.

And he’s got a better record than Punxsutawney Phil in PA for predicting the weather (See below)

Here’s some things you probably don’t know about Grady the Groundhog.

1. Groundhogs are super common in our area but Chimney Rock State Park only keeps rehabbed animals at their exhibit. That means they can’t live alone in the wild. It took 5 years for them to find him. He came to the park in 2010.

2. Grady has a girlfriend at Chimney Rock State Park named Greta! She’s much bigger than him and he weighs about 8 lbs. When he hibernates he grows to more than 10 lbs.

3. Fiona the opossum and Scurry the albino chipmunk live at the park with Grady too. They all stay at the exhibit for the public to visit with.

4. Grady and his brother and sister were found a little dizzy in a road and someone took to a veterinarian. A parasite caused them to have a sickness in their brain and they all recovered differently. Grady’s brother has a crick in his neck, Grady’s sister recovered fully and Grady is all better now, he just gets a little confused every now and then.

5. Grady has been known to correctly predict the end of winter more times than Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania. 50% to Phil’s 30% according to Chimney Rock State Park Officials.

6. Grady’s favorite food is sweet potatoes.

7. Grady likes warmer weather. He puts on weight in the winter when he hibernates.

8. Grady likes it when children come visit him. He likes to perform for cameras and any audience around.

9. Grady is from Minnesota. His lifespan in the wild would be about 4 years but in captivity it’s longer.

10. Groundhogs are the largest member of the squirrel family.
